Dirk Koopman is een schilder in de lyrisch abstracte stijl. Hij werkt met olieverf of acryl kleurrijk en schilderachtig. Soms beweeglijk en stormachtig dan weer verstild tot arcadische landschappen. In zijn steeds verder geabstraheerde werk komt zijn voortdurende zoektocht naar licht tot uiting. Hij werkt sinds 1985 als professioneel kunstenaar en is vooral beïnvloed door William Turner Paul Cézanne Willem de Kooning en Eugène Brands. De schilderijen zijn op linnen/paneel in olieverf of acryl; de tekeningen op papier in Oostindische inkt en/of sepia.
