Ce joyau architectural, dont la construction débuta en 1867 à la demande de Napoléon III afin de divertir la cour qui l’accompagnait pendant ses séjours à Compiègne, fut inauguré, après un long sommeil, en 1991. Exceptionnel par son volume, le Théâtre Impérial l’est également par ses qualités acoustiques. Le célèbre chef d’orchestre Carlo Maria Giulini considérait la salle « comme une des plus parfaites du monde, plus accomplie que celle du Musikverein de Vienne, pourtant la référence en la matière ».
