The Faltazi are eco-designers. They have collaborated with the SEB group, and have designed for them steam irons, vacuum cleaners or electric jugs. They designed products for Schneider Electric, Baby Buggy for Bébé confort. They produce prospective projects as Monsieur Faltazi or Ekokook Kitchen. The Faltazi are often described as being atypical, but what they are involved in doing is to propose a concrete vision of the world and of their profession. As Laurent Lebot insists: “We are pragmatic”, and happy to be so. This is an important point, because their commitment to ecology and society, their genuine aspiration to help develop a sustainable world, combined to their practical experience of industry makes their approach all the more interesting and unusual. Without rejecting the world of production, they imagine alternative, collective scenarios that challenge and seek to change the paradigms that have become settled in design, which is all too often the handmaiden of industrial and economic power. Their contribution is in fact critical. As Victor Massip points out : “The daily basis of industry is not green at all and, in the short term, the government must play its role of key influencer, by genuinely becoming critics of all that is technical”, this is, then, all part of the thinking designer’s role. What it entails is to remain close to the etymological origin of the word ‘design’: to have an intention, to plan, to organize.

Les Faltazi sont designers, industriels même. Ils collaborent avec le groupe SEB, pour lequel ils dessinent fers à repasser, aspirateurs ou encore bouilloires électriques. Ils conçoivent des équipements, des poussettes Bébéconfort… Ils produisent aussi des projets prospectifs tels que Monsieur Faltazi , la cuisine Ekokook ou plus récemment le projet «Les Ekovores». Souvent présentés comme des atypiques, ils proposent avant tout une vision concrète du monde et de leur métier, et Laurent Lebot insiste : «Nous sommes des pragmatiques», de joyeux pragmatiques. Précision importante, car leur engagement écologique et citoyen, leur aspiration réelle au développement d’un monde soutenable, combinés à leur expérience de la pratique industrielle, font tout l’intérêt et la singularité de leur démarche. Sans s’extraire du champ de la production, ils imaginent des scénarios alternatifs, collectifs, qui questionnent et modifient structurellement les paradigmes depuis longtemps installés du design comme partenaire privilégié de la toute puissance industrielle et économique. Un outil critique, en somme. Victor Massip le souligne : «Le quotidien industriel n’est pas vert du tout, et à court terme, la puissance publique doit jouer son rôle de prescripteur, en devenant véritablement critique d’art de la technique», il appartient donc aussi au designer de repenser son rôle. Il s’agit peut être de revenir à une définition étymologique du mot design : avoir l’intention de, planifier, organiser, concevoir.
